How to Perform CPR on a Child

As a parent, knowing how to perform CPR on a child can be lifesaving. At SAV-A-LIFE Skills Training Center in San Angelo, TX, we offer comprehensive CPR Certification Training and First Aid Training to equip you with the skills you need to handle emergencies. Here are the basics every parent should know about performing CPR on a child.

Signs That a Child Needs CPR

Recognizing the signs that a child needs CPR is crucial. Look for the following indicators:

  • Unresponsiveness: The child does not respond to your voice or touch.
  • No Breathing: The child is not breathing or is only gasping.
  • No Pulse: The child has no detectable pulse.

Common Choking Hazards for Children

Children are particularly vulnerable to choking on small objects. Some of the most common choking hazards include:

  • Food: Small, hard foods like nuts, popcorn, and hard candies.
  • Toys: Small parts from toys, such as buttons, beads, and marbles.
  • Household Items: Coins, buttons, and small batteries.

Steps to Perform CPR on a Child

  1. Check for Responsiveness: Gently tap the child and call their name. If there is no response, proceed to the next step.
  2. Call for Help: If you are alone, call 911 or ask someone nearby to call for help.
  3. Open the Airway: Gently tilt the child's head back slightly to open the airway.
  4. Check for Breathing: Look, listen, and feel for breathing for about 10 seconds. If the child is not breathing or is only gasping, begin CPR.
  5. Chest Compressions: Place the heel of one hand on the center of the child's chest. For children, use one or two hands, depending on the child's size. Compress the chest about 2 inches deep at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
  6. Rescue Breaths: After 30 compressions, open the airway again and give 2 rescue breaths. Each breath should last about 1 second and make the chest rise.
  7. Continue CPR: Continue the cycle of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until the child starts breathing or until emergency services arrive.
